BEN RIVERS: Exhibition at The Hepworth Wakefield

11 February - 10 June 2012

Ben Rivers will be showing his recent award-winning film Slow Action. This post-apocalyptic science-fiction film comprises a series of four 16mm sections filmed on location at three island sites across the globe: Lanzarote, Gunkanjima and Tuvalu, as well as Somerset in England.  Presenting a series of constructed realities, the film exists somewhere between documentary, ethnographic study and fiction, with soundtrack narratives by American novelist and critic Mark von Schlegell. From the same body of work Rivers will also exhibit a series of photographic portraits entitled Somerset Clade.

Exhibited alongside Rivers are Heather and Ivan Morison and David Thorpe, using film, sculpture, installation and performance to pose questions regarding our relationship to nature and what happens when man-made and natural worlds collide. These exhibitions explore utopian beliefs and practices and an impending sense of apocalypse.

BEN RIVERS: TWO YEARS AT SEA, Screening at MoMA

21 January 2012

Two Years at Sea is a study of a man called Jake, who features in Rivers' earlier film This is My Land (2006). He is seen in all seasons, surviving frugally, passing the time with strange projects, living the radical dream he had as a younger man, a dream he spent two years working at sea to realise.

Two Years at Sea has been awarded the Fipresci Award at the 68th Venice Film Festival for Best Film, Orizzonti and International Critics’ Week.
