John Smith: Waldeinsamkeit: Films from the 21st Century at Kunstmuseum Magdeburg, Germany

8 March - 6 June 2022

Renowned for its formal ingenuity, subversive wit and oblique storytelling, John Smith’s work blurs the boundaries between documentary, fiction, representation and abstraction. Seventeen years after staging Smith’s first ever solo museum show, Kunstmuseum Magdeburg are presenting a new exhibition of his film and video works, this time focussing on those made over the past two decades. For many years most of his films depicted real and imagined events near his home in East London, but since the turn of the century his field of view has expanded far beyond his native city. Smith’s recent films are often concerned with political situations in the wider world, but he continues to find his subject matter through personal experience and the details of everyday life.

The exhibition is accompanied by a fully illustrated 120 page catalogue featuring an extended essay by Erika Balsom.
