“Off the Shelf Pavilion” was Rio Kobayashi's inaugural large-scale installation. In collaboration with Web Yates Engineers, the project draws deeply from the architectural language of Kobayashi's childhood home in rural Japan, evoking the delicate balance between cultural heritage and contemporary design. The structure’s Torii-inspired form, adorned with wind chimes and gilded details, engages with the elements, transforming wind, rain, and light into a living, immersive experience. Rooted in sustainability, the pavilion utilises unaltered, off-the-shelf materials, elegantly wedged and tied, allowing for complete disassembly and reuse.
