John Smith's solo exhibition at the Vienna Secession will feature his most recent film Being John Smith (2024) alongside The Black Tower (1985-87), Dad's Stick (2012) and recent sculptures and prints.
In conjunction with his solo exhibition and in collaboration with Secession, on 13 September the Austrian Film Museum will present two retrospective programmes of films spanning Smith's entire oeuvre, including post-screening discussions with the artist.
Being John Smith has been screened at film festivals in 21 countries. It has been awarded the Golden Dove (best short documentary), DOK Leipzig International Film Festival, Germany, 2024; Hamburg Short Film Award (best international film) and Audience Award (best film), Hamburg International Short Film Festival, Germany, 2025; Manoel de Oliveira Award (best documentary), Vila do Conde International Short Film Festival, Portugal, 2025; Main Award (best short film), Signs of the Night International Film Festival, Urbino, Italy, 2025 and the festival’s nomination for the European Short Film Award, 2026, Tampere International Film Festival, Finland, 2025.
