Curated by Iwona Blazwick and Katie Delamere, the exhibition takes its inspiration from a line by Shakespeare and unfolds in five acts, exploring figurative sculpture through the work of fourteen contemporary artists.
So's three works reflect her interest in the development of pottery and the earliest representations of the female body. Made using traditional hand coiling techniques and naturally occurring colours, the three-legged form of each woman was inspired by tripod vessels from neolithic China.
Upritchard's 'Eels in Mud' explores the visual and conceptual interplay between land and water. Cast in bronze from a master made in balata rubber – a wild rubber from the Amazon – the work draws on the material’s organic origins.
