An expanded soundtrack to Ben River's and Ben Russell's A Spell to Ward of the Darkness, commissioned by Op. 50.
A Spell follows an unnamed character through three seemingly disparate moments in his life. With little explanation, we join him in the midst of a 15-person collective on a small Estonian island; in isolation in the majestic wilderness of Northern Finland; and during a concert as the singer and guitarist of a black metal band in Norway.
This double gatefold LP for A Spell to Ward of the Darkness both compellingly documents the film's sonic material and presents anew its bold inquiry into transcendence.
The album comprises hauntingly exquisite choral pieces by celebrated Estonian composer Veljo Tormis and Robert A A Lowe, field recordings of sounds from the Finnish wilderness, collaged conversation and music from the film's Vorsmi commune and, finally, an ecstatic live concert by black metal band Queequeg (Hunter Hunt-Hendrix, Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe, Nicholas McMaster, Weasel Walter).
