Silence is named after the essay 'Silence' from Natalia Ginzburg's, The Little Virtues. Written in Italian countryside, where she and her husband lived in exile under fascist rule, Ginzburg explores loneliness and belonging against the backdrop of post-war Europe.

Silence: “There are two kinds of silence; silence with oneself and silence with others. Both kinds make us suffer equally”

The titles of my works are derived from novels, short stories and essays that I’m reading when working in the studio. While making work, I am reflecting on the practices of other female creatives: architects, designers and writers. These women have used their lives to make art, and their voices remain in my mind when using my body to create very physical works. I cut, sew, paint and manipulate large linen surfaces, suspending them so they sit between painting and architecture.
